Ruth Swope, B.A. Music (Violin Concentration), Class of 2022
Why did you choose to attend the Rome School?
I respected the music program and the orchestra, which I thought would give me the opportunity to keep growing as a musician, but I wanted the flexibility of the BA to be able to study other things at the same time. I also liked the idea of being in a city, where there would be more opportunities for work and gigs.
What is one of your favorite memories at Catholic U?
I think the highlights of my years, because I can't pick one, have been great concerts, and the bonding that happens within the orchestra in the final rehearsals leading up to them. I do genuinely love playing in orchestra, and recitals for friends.
Do you have a favorite musical piece to perform?
I'm continually fascinated by Bach, and I love playing Beethoven orchestral pieces: anything where I can enjoy and analyze gorgeous harmonies.
Has there been a moment, event, or person that has had a transformative impact on your life here at Catholic U? Please share your story.
I am grateful for a lot of people in the music school, but probably most grateful for my violin teacher, Jose Cueto. He has been my primary example of someone who is totally in love with music, and totally committed to producing great music in the tradition of the greatest artists of the past. I come away nourished and inspired.
