Admission to the Rome School requires both 1) acceptance into the university, and 2) (for most programs) a successful audition.  These steps can be completed in either order.

The Department of Music offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in multiple areas.  Audition expectations for each of these are outlined below.

  • B.A. in Music

The B.A. in Music includes general studies in music and the liberal arts.  It is an ideal program for students who want to study music and pursue a double major, multiple minors, or extra work in the Honors program.

All prospective students in this program must do one of the following:

Option 1. Audition on a principal instrument or voice to determine placement in 1-credit (semester hours) or 3-credit applied lessons.  Students who wish to be considered for a music scholarship must demonstrate a performing level commensurate with 3-credit lessons.

Option 2. Interview with the Music faculty to determine fit for the program.

In either case, students who wish to study Composition must also submit original compositions for evaluation by the Composition faculty.

  • B.A. in Music with Performance Certificate

The B.A. in Music with Performance Certificate provides a strong foundation for students to pursue additional music study after graduation.  The curriculum also includes ample work in the liberal arts.

All prospective students in this program must audition on a principal instrument or voice and must demonstrate a performing level at their audition that indicates eligibility for 3-credit (semester hours) lessons.  (This is also the performing level required for consideration for music scholarships.) Students who wish to study composition must also submit original compositions for evaluation by the composition faculty.

  • Composition (M.M.)

    Master of Music

    Optional but highly encouraged
    • Applicants with significant performing experience on their instrument are encouraged to submit an audition on that instrument, in order to be considered for a performance-based music scholarship.
    • Applicants are also encouraged to submit a curriculum vitae, a list of works with performance history, and a composer biography.
    Required submissions: scores and recordings
    • Scores should be uploaded in PDF format. Please note that any single item uploaded must be less than 250 MB.  If you have a large work, or a multi-movement work that exceeds that limit, please separate the score into separate documents (each less than 250 MB) to be uploaded separately, clearly labeled as directed below. If submitting a work for electronic media that does not make use of a traditional score, please include a description of how you made the piece, ie, software used, techniques explored, sources for sampled materials, etc.
    • Recordings: mp3 format is preferred for audio files. We also recommend breaking up multi-movement works into separate files. Please note that each individual file has a size limit of 750 MB.  If you have a file that is larger, please break the file into component parts, clearly labeled. Live performances, where available and where legitimately representative of the piece, are preferable to digital realizations.
